Sarajevo, 22.3.2015 – World Water Day has been observed on 22 March since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared 22 March as "World Day for Water". The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries regarding the world's water resources.
This year, World Water Day is celebrated under the motto: "Water and Sustainable Development", indicating the need to examine the links between water and other issues (health, nature, urbanization, industry, energy, food, equality) as a prerequisite for further development of the desired future.
Sustainable development by its definition implies a development which ensures meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Economic development, social and political development and environmental protection are the three key principles underlying the concept of sustainable development. Adequate management of water resources can contribute to poverty reduction, economic development and environmental sustainability. Because of its relationship and impact on other issues, water and sustainable management of water resources is a key element that permeates through the proposed sustainable development objectives.
Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, through its strategic documents, legislation, implementation of programs and projects, participation in regional and global actions, makes its contribution to meeting the global goals. Sustainable management of water resources in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future should be reflected in the full application of the principles of integrated water resources management, strengthening cross-border cooperation, improving the efficiency of water use, capacity building at all levels, improving cooperation with other sectors, and active participation of the public and interested parties in the decision making process.
