MINISTER SAROVIC MET Ms. SILVA MEJIAS, EXECUTIVE SECRETARY, UNEP/MAP

Sarajevo, October 29th, 2012 – Minister Sarovic received a visit from the Executive Secretary of UNEP/MAP from Athens, Ms. Maria Luisa Silva Mejias. Ms. Mejias has been a MAP Coordinator since February 1st, 2011, and she joined the UNEP/MAP-u (United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan) through the Coordination Unit on June 1st, 2009.

The main objective of the Mediterranean Action Plan is to support the implementation of the Barcelona Convention and its seven protocols adopted by the countries of the Mediterranean, which protect the marine and coastal environment and promote sustainable development of the Mediterranean region.

Ms. Mejias thanked Minister Sarovic on the organization of the meeting and stressed the active role representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina had had in activities considering the organization of UNEP/MAP programs and projects. At the same time, she expressed her wish that Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a Mediterranean country, would ratify the remaining protocols of the Barcelona Convention as soon as possible, and especially the Protocol on deep-sea disposal of waste, and that this process would be finalized by the end of next year – in time for the next Conference of Parties of the Barcelona Convention that would be organized in Turkey then. She also invited Minister Sarovic to this Conference

Minister Sarovic thanked her, explained the environmental structure in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and expressed his readiness to do anything in his power in order for the remaining protocols to be ratified by the end of next year.

They also discussed the current activities involving representatives of BiH, such as project The strategic partnership in the Mediterranean, the Horizon 2020 initiative, etc.

Ms. Mejias made ​​herself available for any kind of help and support that the UNEP / MAP might provide to BiH.
